Rebel Rebel - is an acid photo-etched image on mirror-polished stainless steel. Nothing has been printed. The image is created by etching a halftone into the steel. The polished surface creates a low light and the etched surface creates a highlight. The process was widely used to create old fashioned printing plates and is how photographs were first printed in newspapers. The design is a crop of Bowie’s police mugshots repeated in a grid of nine. Bowie was arrested in Rochester, New York on March 25, 1976 along with Iggy Pop for possession of marijuana following a gig. He was held in Monroe County jail for several hours before being released. All charges were eventually dismissed.
